Jackson County, named after President Andrew Jackson, is comprised of such comunities as: McKee, AnnvilleSand Gap,  Tyner, and Gray Hawk.



The Daniel Boone National Forest covers 56,000 acres of Jackson County.  It encompasses much of Jackson County's great beauty and provides a vacation paradise.​


The U.S. Forest Service operates two campgrounds and picnic areas in the county, S-Tree and Turkey Foot Campgrounds. Hikers' favorite is the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail which spans many counties in Kentucky and runs the entire length of Jackson County.


For the most scenic hiking through diverse vegetation, enjoy the trails at Flat Lick Falls Recreational and Scenic Area near Gray Hawk. ï»¿From short-loop, handicap- accessible trails to scenic outlooks, to longer, more rugged trails, the county-owned recreational area has something for everyone.  Open all year long.

​McKee, KentuckyThe Heart of the Sheltowee Trace, (population - 800) is the county seat of Jackson County. Located in the very heart of the county, and surrounded by Daniel Boone National Forest, McKee is the central hub for all your outdoor adventures and historical quests in Jackson County. Named after Judge George R. McKee, the City of McKee was established in 1858, and incorporated in 1882.



McKee is home to the Jackson County Courthouse, Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Jackson County Judicial Center, City of McKee Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, Jackson County Detention Center, McKee Post Office, Jackson County Public Library, Jackson County High School, Jackson County Area Technology Center & Community Theatre, McKee Elementary School, Jackson County Board of Education, Jackson County Extension Office, Jackson County Judge Executive, two banks, three public parks, a variety of eateries, with several cozy inns and cabins nearby, two local newspapers, the Jackson County Sun  and the Jackson Co Times, Lakes Funeral Home, two grocery stores, two general stores, Appalachian Wireless, PRTC (People's Rural Telephone Cooperative), Jackson County Industrial Development Authority, Jackson County Development Association, and a host of natural and historical curiosities.

Jackson County Regional Food Center - Annville, Kentucky
 

The mission of the Jackson County Regional Food Center is to assist the family farmers and entrepreneurs in renewing prosperity and quality of life by working together to obtain a profitable return for farm products.

 

Owner: Appalachian Alternative Agriculture of Jackson County (3AJC), a non- profit group.

Who can use the food center? Any grower, producer or entrepreneur who grows and or develops food products on a larger scale for retail and wholesale markets can rent the facility. The kitchen equipment includes 40 and 60 gallon steam kettles, a tilt skillet, large canners, a gas range, convection oven, label machine, filling machine and much more than can allow anyone to process and package a product on a larger scale.

 

Product examples include jams, jellies, salsas, barbecue sauces, dressings, baked goods, candies just to name a few.

 

The goal of 3AJC is to provide a fully-equipped licensed facility that can eliminate the overhead costs that come with taking an idea and developing that idea into a product that can be produced, processed and packaged locally on a much larger scale. The Food Center can provide you with assistance in developing a product including developing the idea and recipe, getting the nutritional facts for that product, meeting all the regulations necessary to market the product and the actual processing and packaging and labeling of the product.

 

In addition to the food center, 3AJC also has a docking station for the poultry mobile processing unit owned by Kentucky State University that will allow producers to grow, harvest and package chickens and other poultry that have been for retail sales. A honey extraction unit is also available for beekeepers use in the area.
